Understand the process
Add a functional layer to a moving web
Coating applies a controlled layer to a substrate to obtain a specific surface function. Examples discussed in the training include cold seal and heat seal. Application method, coverage and drying must match the chemistry and end use.
Select the application method
Assess gravure, flexographic or other supported coating systems for the material and coating chemistry.
Control coverage
Determine whether the layer covers the full web or must align with a printed pattern. Registered applications need suitable register control.
Dry or condition
Use the required drying or conditioning route and confirm winding behaviour before releasing the coated web.
What we review with you
- Application target
- Define coating function, target coat weight, coverage and uniformity.
- Process compatibility
- Check the web, coating system, dryer and downstream sealing or converting operation together.
- Validation
- Agree trials and acceptance criteria with the supplier; a listed coating technology does not guarantee every chemistry is compatible.
